ESP32 - which versions are supported by ESPeasy?

#1 Post by Regolsis » 17 Oct 2022, 10:37

Hi,

is there a list of all the different ESP32-types which are supported by ESPeasy?

I thought about buying some ESP32 for testing and found out, that there is not ONE ESP32, but probably 100 :o

ESP32 (the "old" one) with 2 cores.
We're not actually using the 2nd core, but the single core ones tend to enter a reboot loop which I need to look into.
When known, try to use the ones with 3rd revision silicon (not always mentioned) as it contains some bug fixes (which I'm also working around in the firmware)
The really old ones (I have one....) don't have calibration data included for the ADC.

Also the ESP32-S2 is supported.

Main difference between them:
S2 has more GPIO pins available and seems a bit more "snappy".
ESP32 (non S2) can support Ethernet.

S2 has 2 Hardware Serial ports, the "old one" has 3.

Support for S2 is relative new, but so far I haven't heard about many issues. So it seems to work just fine.

The others are not yet supported, but are high on my todo list:
C3, S3 and when available the H2 (Threads support!!)

When having the option, I strongly suggest to go for the ones with 16M flash.
Then you can run the MAX builds.

When selecting a Wemos mini-like board like this one, I suggest to pick the one with a CP2104 serial chip over the somewhat cheaper CH9102X serial, as on the boards I have with that CH9102X, they refuse to automatically activate the Flash mode when flashing via serial, and, by lack of a boot button, I have to use a wire from GPIO-0 to GND to get it into flash-mode :(.
