Loss of connection with ESP8266

#1 Post by ohaldi » 04 Jan 2022, 13:43

I’m using many ESP8266 mainly with ESPEasy (sometimes Tasmota).
These ESP are connected to my ASUS RT-AX86U Router. I don't understand why I lose my connections with some of them very regularly.
On my 10 pieces, 50% are often lost. I have added reboot scripts mainly on the ESPEasy if it had no connection, but this does not solve my problem.
I can't find the cause of these problems. Are there any tools to trace to find out this problem?
Can we optimize a configuration in the ASUS router?
Actually, to get again the connection, I must take off/on the power supply. But After a few hours
Many thanks in advance for any help?
Otto

This may be a case of (or related to) the ASUS Mesh (or is it mess...) configuration, see this related thread viewtopic.php?f=6&t=8851&p=55920&hilit=asus+mesh#p55920

OK, I did the following on my ASUS RT-AX86U:
-Go to [Wireless] > [General] page. Turn off [Enable Smart Connect] and select the [Band] for your network devices.
-Disable [802.11ax / WiFi 6 mode]
-Disable [Wi-Fi Agile Multiband]
-Disable [Target Wake Time]
-Disable [Protected Management Frames][/i]
I will now test it for y few days.
Thanks for your help

You did many changes at once, that's usually not the best method to actually pinpoint the issue.
I'd have started by only disabling the Smart Connect feature, as suggested in the links, to keep/use as many (modern) features of your router, for devices that do support that.

If there are still issues, only then disable the next of the features you mentioned (trying the entire matrix if needed). That can be time-consuming, I know.

I think those settings were indeed mentioned in the Asus knowledgebase article linked in one of the links I posted.

I think the WiFi code in the ESP SDK (the closed source part) does have 2 main issues here:
- It doesn't advertise all available protocols needed to comply to the 802.11n standard (it does support them, but doesn't tell the access point it does)
- It seems we're missing one important event type where the access point tells the connecting station to wait as it is busy.

But that's what I suspect is causing these issues here, based on low-level debugging against the black box of the closed source WiFi code and what I have read online about this subject and about WiFi mesh standards.

In fact I Turn off [Enable Smart Connect] only this option.
The another one were already on Disable.
In the next few days, I'll try to set these options to Enable and see if it makes a difference.

Just for your information:
After months of research. I sold my ASUS RT-AX86U router. I replaced it by the model of teltonika, the RUTX10.
That solved all my WIFI communication problem. Don't ask me why. I don't have the knowledge for that.

@ohaldi So, did turning off those options solve the disconnect issue? I too am running into this issue with some of my esp8266. I had no issues with them on my google nest router, but with this Asus AX8 they drop off every other day...it's so frustrating. I just turned off all those settings tonight per the Asus guide: https://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1042475/

Have you set it to force "B/G only" mode?
Please also make sure you set the WiFi to send at max. TX power and don't use ECO mode.
