WiFi speed issue with core 2.4.0

#1 Post by vader » 04 Jan 2018, 16:04

I have after upgrading to core 2.4.0 a very slow WiFi. Reverted back to 2.3.0 and all is ok again. :? Have others this issue too?

Don't have the skills to compile that myself, but what is the screenshot showing?

It shows how slow the transmission is compared to the others with core 2.3.0

So 3/4 is transfer rate, connection speed or ?. How do you test throughput?

If you have a .bin with 2.4.0 Core, I'd like to see what I get.

Yes, it's Mbit/s...

Just compile it with Arduino. Core 2.4.0 is there selectable ;)

Sorry for seeming dumb, but Mbit/s what, and how do you measure it? What connection speed does the AP claim the client to have? And it's not a question of 802.11b being chosen instead of 802.11g or n? (I had that in my initial ventures with ESP8266)

The values are from the router info page. It's the speed between router (access point) and client. I know g is not the fastest mode, but I had some trouble with other devices that can only g. With mixed mode in router (g/n) they lost often the connection (for what reason ever...). So I set the router fixed to g mode.....

ok, then I would assume it's the datarate and not transfer speed. Often clients jump between the data-rates depending on many factors, so it's not a pointer towards poor throughput.

But I'll see if I can compile with 2.4.0 and test. I've got some tools to test Wi-Fi with :).
Could be interesting to see iperf3 on an ESP8266.

On that way you can try to compile 2.4.0 with lwip v2, which is default now. I get 1000 error messages with arduino and have no idea what's going on...

It could also be the 2.4.0 branch of the core now does allow a more dynamic connection speed.
I can see similar information in my Fritzbox devices. (also number of antenna's, etc)
When my mobile is active, the datarate goes up to 866 Mbps (5 GHz AC WiFi), but when inactive the connection speeds can get as low as 5 Mbps or even less. Probably to save battery power and less interference with other devices.

@TD-er: That was also my 1st thought. I have a FritzBox 7490 and use only 2.4GHz band. With core 2.3 it shows up to 54MBit/s (when client is near by), but with core 2.4 it drops down to 1MBit/s! Look first a bit scary  Ok, the amount of transfered data from the ESPs is less....
BTW: Can you compile ESP Easy in Arduino with lwip v2? I get a lot of errors :(

I am just running the libraries which are included in v2.0.0-dev13 or Mega branch.
Too busy looking for issues to fix and features to add ;)
