flash esp32 board does not work

#1 Post by kolia999 » 15 Sep 2023, 09:23

Hello,
I am new to ESPEasy and am trying to flash an ESP32 (ESP32 NodeMCU Module WLAN WiFi Development Board with CP2102).
Have tried a few things and read me but do not get further.
The Windows driver for USB seems to be installed correctly (is also the latest version).
I also found out that when connecting the USB cable to the ESP, I have to press and hold the "Boot" button to enter the flash mode.
Use the bin "ESP_Easy_mega_20230822_normal_ESP32_4M316k".
Have tried as flash tools "ESP.Easy.Flasher" and "flash_download_tool_3.9.5".
With the "ESP.Easy.Flasher" I run into the error:
"[14.09.2023 17:43:42] trying to connect
[14.09.2023 17:43:42] flush start
[14.09.2023 17:43:42] setting serial port timeouts to 1 ms
[14.09.2023 17:43:42] setting serial port timeouts to 1000 ms
[14.09.2023 17:43:42] flush complete
[14.09.2023 17:43:42] espcomm_send_command: sending command header
[14.09.2023 17:43:42] espcomm_send_command: sending command payload
[14.09.2023 17:43:42] read 0, requested 1
[14.09.2023 17:43:42] warning: espcomm_sync failed
[14.09.2023 17:43:42] error: espcomm_open failed
[2023-09-14 17:43:42] error: espcomm_upload_mem failed
[2023-09-14 17:43:42] STOPPED due to 2 errors! (try reset on the unit, then start a new flash attempt)"
and the "flash_download_tool_3.9.5" seems to start and to flash (red LED glances continuously) and in the cmd window the dots keep running, but the whole thing does not finish, waited over 30 min.

What am I doing wrong?
What else can I try?

Thanks

ESPEasy flasher has been removed from the build as it only supports ESP8266 and none of the ESP32 variants we support.

I've also seen a few ESP32 board that won't toggle the "Boot" mode via the USB port and indeed require you to keep the boot button pressed or short GPIO-0 to GND.
Not sure why this doesn't work anymore.

You can also try to keep the boot button pressed and then insert the USB power.
Keep the boot button pressed till it successfully starts the flashing procedure.
Or just short GPIO-0 to GND to force the ESP to always be in flash mode and then power it on.
Remember to remove this short after flashing completes and power cycle the ESP board.

The Espressif download tool should work just fine.

Have you also tried flashing it using the web flasher? https://td-er.nl/ESPEasy/
N.B. only works in Chrome and maybe Edge.

hi,
thanks for fast reply and the information.
I tried the web flascher with Edge and that seems to have been successful.
After a power off/on a found a new wifi access point "ESP-Easy".
Because this is prodected I need the key for the wifi access.
What is the key or is there a documentation for the web flascher?

You find the default password here:

https://espeasy.readthedocs.io/en/lates ... onfig.html

under "WPA AP Mode Key". It should be: configesp

Select the "Environment - 1-Wire Temperature" device, it supports more than just the DS18B20, so it has been renamed to be more generic.

Hi, I'm new and don't know your forum very well.
My name is Alfredo and I really like messing around with IoT.. I installed your software on esp32, everything is ok, I just have a problem that I can't solve..
In any way I set the reset, with any gpio it doesn't just delete the wifi network but it deletes the entire display, sensors etc..
can you help me??

What kind of help do you need? You want to delete the WiFi settings also, or you don't want the display and sensors deleted when using the reset options?

You can connect to the unit via a serial terminal when it's connected via USB Serial to your computer. The COM port to use can be retrieved from your OS showing the ports available. Settings: 115200 baud, No parity 8 data bits, 1 stop bit.
When connected like that you should see some logging show up.

Alternative: Use the WebFlasher at https://TD-er.nl/ESPEasy from Chrome or Edge browsers, that offers a similar terminal option.

Once that's working you can type commands to the unit. With a direct connected terminal you won't see what you are typing, and can't correct errors using backspace, until you press Enter, the webflasher terminal does show what you are typing, and you can correct using backspace etc.
Then type these commands:

Code: Select all

WiFiSSID,your_ssid_name
WiFiKey,your_wifi_password
Save
After typing Save and pressing Enter, the unit will save settings and should start reconnecting to the AP. If it doesn't start doing that, type this command: WiFiDisconnect (and press Enter, of course)
That should get you connected.

The IP command will show the assigned IP-address of the unit from DHCP, that's quicker then trying to figure that out via your WiFi router 8-)

sorry but you see I didn't explain myself well, I can make everything work, except that I try it at home and I have a wifi, where I want to put it I have another... I saw that there is the setting on the last page where to select what to keep and what to delete by doing a reset via a pin, I tried all the available versions and various pins to perform the reset with esp32.. in any configuration it deletes my wifi, settings everything.. it brings it to the initial state even if in theory it should at least keep the settings set and only delete the wifi credentials to change networks..

Ah, I see. Originally, the reset feature just plainly cleared all settings. Later it has gotten options to exclude some of the settings from being cleared, but apparently that's not working as expected. (I'm not really familiar with that code, but I'll have a look.)

For having your dual-location use, there is the Fallback WiFi AP setting on the Config page. If ESPEasy can't connect to the first AP, it will try the second AP, and vice versa. It's of course best to configure the first WiFi settings for the location it is used most often, but that's not required, it will just take some extra time to fail the first AP, then try and use the fallback.

I know the "keep settings" checkboxes on the reset factory default page isn't working always.
