Which firmware version for ESP-01S 1 mb ???

#1 Post by obstbauer » 25 May 2023, 15:58

Hello,
I want to use an ESP-01S with 1 Mb Memory board 8266 with ESPEasy and I don't know which firmware version I should use for installation?
I would like to use a version like this "ESPEasy_mega-20230508_normal_ESP8266_1M.bin"
This version is mentioned on the github page and make sense for me but it is not included in the actual "mega-20230508" ???
I want to us a BME280 sensor and I want to use the data with MQTT in my iobroker.
Which version should I use for flashing ? There are only 4 Mb versions?
Thank you and sorry I am a beginner
Regardas

Hi,

Shortly after the 20230508 release of ESPEasy, a rather major change was merged that has reduced the .bin size for some builds significantly. But to avoid disappointment, (and pressure on the dev team ), this isn't released yet, but still under test. As it has proven to be quite stable, it is safe to use though.
Today a new plugin has been merged, and that produces freshly built binaries via the Github Actions system, so you could test using the downloads from this run. You'll need the zip file that has ESP82xx in the name (as is to be expected, it's named with xx because these builds support both ESP8266 and ESP8285 chips). This zip includes several builds for 1MB Flash devices, like the ESP01s.
You'd best use either the normal_ESP8266_1M or normal_ESP8266_1M_VCC binary files.

When buying new ESP boards, please consider using ESP32 boards (we support ESP32, ESP32-S2, ESP32-C3 and ESP32-S3 CPUs), as the prices of these boards are dropping rapidly, and especially the ESP32-C3 has some very good alternatives for the smaller ESP8266 boards (see f.e. this tiny one)

NB: this isn't the ESPEasy part of the forum, but that's no problem, it is still read ;), I expect a moderator can move this thread, I don't have those powers
NB2: You will need a (free) Github account, and logged in via the browser, to be able to download from the Actions run.

Or if you're really limited to the small size of the ESP-01S with the specific pin header, you can also consider replacing the 1M flash chip for a 4MB flash chip.

That will make upgrading things a lot simpler.

N.B. that module Ton linked, the SEEEDstudio C3 module, is my personal new favorite board.
It really is a nice compact board and I've almost finished supporting serial over USB for the ESPEasy console, so you're left with nearly all accessible pin available for your own choices.

Rules do not work on my ESP-01S when loading assemblies newer than Easy_mega_20220328_normal_ESP8266_1M

What is not working?
Saving the rules file or something else?

The rules themselves are not followed, there is no reaction.

You have hijacked someone else's thread, you'd better have started a new thread...
------------------------

Please show what's not working where you would have expected to work, like your rules, or possibly any hardware or tasks involved. Now it just a generic remark "it doesn't work", nobody can see what's on your desk from here .

sorry for my late answer
now it works for me with the firmware you mentioned
@ Ath: thank you!
At the moment I am fine with the ESP-01 because I only want to read out a BME280 Chip and I need it three times for different places

There is only one small problem:

I don't understand why my wifi settings are not saved during flashing. I always have to connect via access point to put them in manually.

Try saving the settings via the "save" command on the tools page.

Also, please let me know what type of flash chip is present on your unit. (can be found on the sysinfo page)
