ESP-8266 disconnecting?

#1 Post by gfield » 02 Oct 2021, 10:20

I have trouble with getting my ESP-8266 with ESP_Easy_mega_20210802_normal_ESP8266_4M1M to connect to my local WiFi. I have tried to make it connect both to my home WiFi as well as an AP created by my phone, but without success. In the case of my phone, I could see the unit for a brief moment (under connected devices in the phone's menu system) before the ESP-8266 unit apparantly disconnected.

The ESP-8266 comes from Plusivo kit (https://www.plusivo.com/home/66-plusivo ... o-ide.html). Below I've posted output from the serial monitor. It looks like the unit is connected, but I can't reach it or ping it over the network.

First you should disable the periodical scan for WiFi (I will remove the option as it is causing lots of issues.
And it seems like static IP may also be an issue here. Have to admit I have not tested static IP for a while. So will look into that part.

Can you first uncheck the periodical WiFi scan?
And if that's not working, can you try using DHCP?

How can I remove the periodical scan and the static IP address?

I have used ESP Easy Flasher to pre-configure the device via serial communication. I can't seem to remove the static IP adress through this tool. Unchecking static IP and then pressing "Program only" does not change the static IP. I am guessing that the tool assumes that the settings are "blank" and doesn't write anything at all when the checkbox is unchecked, i.e. it is impossible to remove the static IP address via this tool once it is set.

Is there some way to configure ESP-Easy via serial communication myself? Is the protocol documented somewhere?

(On a related note, I get readable serial output when monitoring using the serial monitoring program included in ESP Easy Flasher, but only jibberish when looking at the output from PuTTy. What is the baud rate? I'm using an ESP-8266 with a USB-TTCH340 chipset if that should matter...)

Baudrate is 115200.

See: https://espeasy.readthedocs.io/en/lates ... l-commands
You can set the IP address via the command line (on the terminal connection via the serial port)
I have not tested it myself, but I guess setting it to an empty value may be used to set it back to DHCP:

Code: Select all

ip,
save
or set it to 0.0.0.0:

Code: Select all

ip,0.0.0.0
save
Disabling periodical WiFi scan can only be done via the tools->advanced page (bottom page), but I can see that's a bit hard to do if the ESP does not seem to be reachable.

The disconnects seem to happen approximately every 8th second. Is this consistent with that the problem is periodical WiFi-scanning?

I seem to have the same issue as this: viewtopic.php?t=7035

Things that I have tried:
  1. Flash first with blank_4M.bin and then re-flash with ESP_Easy_mega_20210802_normal_ESP8266_4M1M.bin
  2. Use an alternative WiFi network (Moto G8 Power mobile phone AP vs TP-LINK Archer MR200 router)
  3. Tried shorter WiFi password (14 symbols vs 30 symbols)
I did manage to connect to the ESP-Easy AP and reach the configuration page at one point when I did not set up any default networks, but it froze/stopped working after the page was loaded once. (I.e. I could not change any settings.)

I'm going to try ESP_Easy_mega_20210802_normal_alt_wifi_ESP8266_4M1M.bin next...

Could this be a HW problem?

Re: ESP-8266 disconnecting?

#7 Post by TD-er » 02 Oct 2021, 17:34

A hardware problem is not really likely.
I only found one module (black PCB, no shield over the ESP, looks like NodeMCU form factor) which does have really lots of problems with builds running core 2.5.x or newer (last 2 - 3 years).

Is your WiFi access point also using WiFi mesh?
Or is it an Asus access point?

Maybe it is a hardware problem. :D

What you are describing sounds like what I am working with.

I installed the alt_wifi version with no success. Then I stopped powering the unit via USB from my computer and connected it to a phone charger, and now got some more success. I managed to access the interface through the ESP Easy AP and configure the unit to access my home wi-fi. Now the unit shows up in the router menu as a connected unit, but I can't ping the unit... (Destination host unreachable.)

You can try to hold your thumb over the PCB antenna.
It may even feel slightly warmer than the rest (not hot, no worries :) ) and by pressing the PCB antenna you may affect its tuning, which may help your unit to connect.

A build older than May 2019 (from the top of my head, could also be May 2018) may work though as those builds run core 2.4.0 or older.

It is quite unlikely that it would be related to fixed ip addresses, as *all* my units have a fixed ip address, and that is working fine here.
And also using a mesh system (TP Link Deco 9 plus, has the best coverage across my house) or the Netgear regular router as that's my secondary wifi setting. (Seeing the issues reported when using an Asus wifi mesh system, that's not my next purchase 8-) )

I don't have those Asus access points, but from what I've read about it online, it does look like it may be related to how the ESP does formulate its DHCP request and perhaps some timing issue or disconnect command issued by the mesh AP when it thinks another AP may be less utilized or according to the AP's may be more in range.

Anyway good to hear the static IP is not an issue.

Yep this PCB does look a lot like the one on my desk (sent to me by a user)
The one on my desk does show "Wemos" on the silkscreen on the antenna, but component layout is exactly the same.
Even the spots where there is no component but only solder pads.
