ESP Easy Firmware Update

#1 Post by ChickenHead0815 » 07 Jul 2021, 22:06

Hello,

another newbie question:
I am using this firmware 20210223 and would like to update to the new version 20210503.

If I click on "Firmware" under Tools

I get this view in the browser.

I can't do anything with that ...

I would therefore now completely reflash with the usual tools like FlashESP82166.exe. ... but that's not how it is intended, right?

For the ESP's, like an ESP-01, equiped with 1MB of flash, there are only a few .bin files small enough to allow OTA (Over The Air) updates, so, yes, reflashing using the flasher tool is the regular way of updating. Though not very convenient indeed.

To make it less inconvenient, all settings should be kept as-is, as long as you don't use a blank .bin file first ;)

Just a little warning, better not update to 20210503, as it has a known issue with WiFi reconnect.
If you want to experience the update... please try this experimental web flasher, which has a build that does have the WiFi issue fixed: https://td-er.nl/ESPEasy/

Unfortunately, ESP_Easy_mega_20210615 doesn't always select the best SSID (Highest RSSI), but it might be better than previous versions :D

What is the Operating System platform you are on?
And what browser are you using?
Possibly using a browser plugin that blocks almost everything like scripts and stuff?

For the ESP's, like an ESP-01P ...
... I think I found my mistake: I don't have an ESP-01...
I flashed the ... 1MB.bin file on my D1 mini.

But now I have the new problem that this D1 is no longer recognized by the USB-Serial CH340 connection.
Didn't he survive the flash action with the 1M bin file?
Is there still hope to join him ?! Can you force that?

You can force flash mode by holding the "GPIO-0 button" pressed and shortly pressing the RST button while keeping the first one pressed.
And if some flasher tool or serial monitor keeps the com port open, you cannot access the COM port with another program.
Simply unplugging and replugging may also help to "release" this lock.

Can you send me a direct message with your IP address?
I have some IP-ranges blocked due to hack attempts (1000's of them... per day some times) but I also got some reports of others that were now blocked from a country which does not reflect the comment next to the IP-block.
So I guess some IP blocks were sold to other providers and they sold the least interesting ones as those were blocked in various tools.

I flash the D1 directly via the USB port, where is the "GIPO 0" button?
And if some flasher tool or serial monitor keeps the com port open, you cannot access the COM port with another program.
I can rule it out. Other D1 are recognized without problem ...
Simply unplugging and replugging may also help to "release" this lock.
I tried that several times without success.

Ah sorry, the Wemos D1 mini does only have a reset button.
Was thinking about those NodeMCU boards...

If you have issues with the board, please try using a different USB cable, and/or connect it directly to an USB3 port on the PC (those can deliver higher current)

No solution to the problem ...
I connected a new Wemos to the same USB using the same cable without any problems.
It is interesting that the Wemos with the "wrong" BIN (see beginning of this post) is perfectly
addressable and can be configured.
So it is "actually" not defective, right?
It is just not recognized by the USB port ...

I don't think it is defective, but more likely it is drawing too much power.
A new unit does not try to connect to WiFi, but one that is running ESPEasy is.

So that's why I suggested to use a different (better) USB cable and also to make sure it can draw enough power by using an USB3 port.
